Ava’s Story

Ava* stayed in the care of our Kia Tīmata Anō safe house in 2021. This is her story:

“My daughter and I were unsafe. We had no place to go and no money. Everything was becoming too much for me.

Before I came here, I had had years of abuse. I was broken, exhausted, scared and wasn’t sleeping.

There were so many times I wanted to leave my relationship, but I just couldn’t do it. But in the end, I did it for my kids.

I knew I needed help. Kindred Family Services connected me with mental health services who reviewed my medication. The review helped a lot. I learnt much more about my medication, and I now understand how they affect my mood and energy. I started to do a lot more research so I could understand my condition more.  I never felt judged.

Going into refuge gave me a chance to just stop and rest. I slept.

We found peace and quiet.

My daughter was so relaxed and happy there.

I was worried about losing custody of my daughter, but my advocates were patient and explained the legal process to me many times until I understood it and helped me get a protection order and a parenting order. I also did a Parenting Through Separation programme.

After a couple of weeks in refuge, parenting support began coming once a week for three hours to help look after my daughter when I had counselling or needed some time out. I would often go to the beach for a walk to think and clear my head.

I was given kai packs when my finances were low. They were amazing, delicious and healthy.  I still use some of the recipes today.

Now I am safe. I am so happy. I am not scared of him anymore.

I have reconnected with my family. My daughter is at a great kindy and making new friends.  I have joined a dance class.

I’m discovering ME again.

It’s been so long since I have felt this strong.  I still have some low days, but I know they will pass.  I have reconnected with my faith and spiritual side again.

If I hadn’t come here, I don’t think I would be on this earth.  I was so low.

Thank you to the advocates and ladies at the safe house.  I wouldn’t have got through this without your help.  You are an amazing team.  You were always there for me 24/7.  You all worked so hard for my son and me.

I am forever grateful and blessed to have crossed paths.”
